Bernie would have won.

Antonin Scalia is dead. I think you meant Samuel Alito.

Also -

"[T]he party abandon immigrants and LGBTQ+ people. And many Democrats will be happy to do it — it’s always their go-to pivot. But it never works, because it’s phony, which is part of what plagues the party."

...is a perfect encapsulation of the party. Thank you.

Haha whoops, I wrote that at 4:30 in the morning. I may have hallucinated a haunting by Scalia’s ghost at that point. I’ll fix it

That's fair. And honestly it does seem his ghost haunts us with every shitty, poorly reasoned opinion of his we now have to live with.

Your post is almost identical to several others I’ve read today. I think we are seeing the end of neoliberalism, but its demise is leaving us with a void in the body politic. Can we step forward to fill that void? How do we do that within the confines of a two party system? Is that even possible?

These are really interesting (and necessary!) questions. Unfortunately, I can't even begin to answer them.

They don’t need no stinking reasons. Not going back? Maybe not individually, but surely as a nation, and a planet. To vote for Trump ever was bad, but to vote for this Trump says to this American, to this human, that a majority of American voters are haters: they hate progressives, liberals, women, gays, the poor, immigrants, blacks, people who don’t worship their imagined Christian god, and on and on.

The only thing that may keep this 73 year old here is my family, and after this election, in which a talented, relatively young multi-racial woman who ran a great campaign lost to a doddering, low-information, racist, etc., etc., dangerous idiot who ran a terrible campaign, this dual citizen will definitely have a back-up plan.

I'm glad you have a backup plan. I wish we were all that lucky.

Now I remember what happened: I was actually reading about another Scalia as Trump’s first labor secretary right before I wrote that paragraph.

I vaguely remember that, I think? Who knows. Everything is kind of a blur at this point. And I didn't even go to bed at some ungodly hour!

America the land of “the bought”!

For my entire lifetime (beginning with FDR) Democrats have tried to do a lot for women, seniors, workers, unions, the economy and obviously would have done more had the Repugnants in Congress not put a stop to so much of what they tried. If the majority of the American voters want authoritarianism or Fascism (let's state it plainly for what it is) and according to Musk a painful economic contraction for the next few years, then they get what they want. I no longer choose to call myself an American. Fortunately, we left a year ago. It didn't stop me from sending much of my retirement income to Progressive candidates and causes, and voting, but the 74 million that wanted T in 2020 made me say enough of living amongst them. God, I'm so glad now with this new insult.

Thank you for continuing to care all year, and please do not send Democrats any more money! It’s clear that the party is rotten from the top and it’ll taken a lot of work to fix it, if that even makes a difference. What a catastrophe.

I’m in shock. Can’t even cry. Thank you for this in-depth review of where we are, and what we need to do next.

I underestimated how racist and misogynistic the average American is. (Already knew about the homophobia and transphobia.)
